For example, Lesson 1 starts with an introductory story about Bobby, an English- speaking little boy, who wants to play with Maria, a Spanish-speaking little girl.  Children put on Bobby and Maria finger puppets and use the puppets to learn how to say greetings and introductions.  Then they learn a song and play a game.  Everything is pronounced on the CDs.

Fast forward to Lesson 5: Each lesson reviews and builds on vocabulary from previous lessons.  In this lesson children go on a picnic. The CD directs them to pack the picnic basket… “la canasta.” “Hold up an apple…una manzana and put it in … la canasta.”  Children march to the picnic, singing the “Picnic Song.” They learn how to say “I am hungry” and “I eat an apple.”  The lesson concludes with counting 1-10 to story time. Children hear an all-in-Spanish story about a picnic, with onscreen visuals.

Fast Forward to Lesson 7: As usual, the lesson reviews and builds on vocabulary from previous lessons.  Today is restaurant day.  Children set the table while learning the words for each utensil.  Children greet the “server” and ask, “how are you?” in Spanish.  They ask for an apple, and chant “aquí tienes una manzana” (here is an apple) to a catchy beat.  Great time to introduce “please” and “thank you.” After the meal, count down to story time for an all-in-Spanish story using previously learned vocabulary.

Spanish in a Basket teaches hundreds of basic Spanish words and phrases.  Repetition -- the key to language learning  -- is built into the program. Learn:  Greetings, Days of the Week, Foods/Meals, Alphabet, Animals, Verbs, Descriptions, Colors, Numbers, Clothing, Travel Vocabulary, Weather and Seasons, Culture and hundreds of words and practical expressions.

Pros:
  • Engaging
Cons:
We were looking for a preschool Spanish program for our daycare center. Spanish in a Basket works well - the lessons are short which are perfect for this age group and they enjoy all the manipulatives and music and sound effects. We leave it in the listening center and it gets lots of use. We also have the Fun Spanish for Kids CD.

Cons:
We already have Fun Spanish for Kids and decided to go a bit deeper and try this kit. He seems to enjoy learning Spanish. Just received it but so far my five year old loves it. He was intrigued with all the animals, foods etc. He did the first lesson and had fun using the adorable finger puppets and learning hola, me llamo Bobby etc. I like the idea that he is very involved and not just passively staring at a screen. And he is definitely learning Spanish. Tomorrow he''ll try lesson 2.
